Filmmaker Werner Herzog, in late November 1974, received a phone call from Paris with devastating news: his close friend Lotte Eisner was gravely ill and nearing death. Determined to defy fate, Herzog believed that embarking on a pilgrimage by foot would save Eisner's life. Armed with just a jacket, compass, duffel bag of essentials, and a new pair of boots, Herzog set out on a three-week journey from Munich to Paris, braving the harsh winter weather and snowstorms along the way.
Of Walking in Ice is Herzog's eloquently written and often overlooked diary chronicling this remarkable trek. From vivid descriptions of the icy landscape and brutal conditions to his struggles to find shelter in abandoned homes, Herzog captures the essence of his solitary odyssey. The diary also includes Herzog's 1982 "Tribute to Lotte Eisner" upon her receipt of the Helmut Käutner Prize, a heartfelt homage to a woman he greatly admired.
